On Sunday afternoon, July 7, the Riverhead Police Department issued the alert, saying signs throughout the town saying "Government Auction" should be ignored and the phone number on the sign should not be called.
The department noted officers are removing the signs.
The public is encouraged to notify the department if any signs are spotted at 631-727-8630.
