The Metro-North has good news for those who want to catch sight of the fall colors this year in the Hudson Valley. The Hudson Line will be running additional trains on select weekends from Saturday, Oct. 8, through Sunday, Nov. 20, to provide more options for those who want to spend the day visiting towns in the region, such as Peekskill in Westchester County, Cold Spring in Putnam County, and Beacon in Dutchess County. Person Fatally Struck By Train In Poughkeepsie
An investigation is underway after an individual was fatally struck by a train in the Hudson Valley over the weekend. A person was hit by a northbound Metro-North train in Dutchess County between New Hamburg and Poughkeepsie at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, May 29, according to representatives from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The individual died at the scene, MTA said. Representatives did not release the identity or any details about the person who died. Check back to Daily Voice for updates.

Metro-North To Start Upgrading Parking Lots At Two Dutchess County Stations
Metro-North Railroad has announced a series of parking lot upgrades at three Hudson Valley stations. MTA said upgrades will be made at the stations in Putnam County -- in Cold Spring -- and Dutchess County -- in Beacon, and New Hamburg -- in August and September. MTA said temporary closures and parking restrictions will be necessary as work is underway to create better drainage and install new pavement and pavement markings. The Cold Spring parking lot will be closed for about a week beginning Monday, Aug. 16 while crews work on the area. MTA said the lot will be repaved with new asphalt. …

Man Dies In Poughkeepsie Condo Fire, Officials Say
One person died when a fire broke out in a second-floor Hudson Valley condo unit, officials announced. Crews from the Arlington Fire Department responded to the Greenbriar Condominiums on South Road (Route 9) in Poughkeepsie at approximately 6:35 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, where there was a report of smoke coming from underneath the sink of a unit. Arlington Fire Chief William Steenbergh said that a volunteer member of Arlington who lives in that complex exited his home and observed a large quantity of smoke in the area. A two-alarm fire broke tore through the kitchen of a popular Dutchess County fast-food restaurant, fire officials said. Crews from the Arlington Fire Department were dispatched at approximately 9:25 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, to Popeye’s Restaurant on Haight Avenue in the Town of Poughkeepsie, where there was a report of a fire in the kitchen. Metro-North May Raise Parking Fees At Some Stations
Parking may be getting a bit costlier for Metro-North riders. The MTA is reviewing a proposal to increase fees at 25 station parking facilities that are controlled by the railroad. It would impact riders east of the Hudson River, including the Harlem, Hudson and New Haven lines. Permit holders for 16-hour parking would pay an average of $42.75 annually, approximately 12 cents a day. Customers who use daily meters will pay an average of $14.17 more monthly, with the meters increasing by 50 to 75 cents for 16-hour parking. Popular Wappinger Café Facing Uncertain Future
The owners of a popular new restaurant in the area who have been fighting to stay open after complaints from neighbors got a reprieve of sorts during a zoning meeting. Café Con Leche, a Puerto Rican eatery located in Wappinger at 10 Main St., in a building that was built in 1852, and has been home to another cafe and a deli and catering outfit, will be allowed to stay open until at least Oct. 21, after the Town of Poughkeepsie Zoning Board tabled the issue until the next meeting. Resident Thwarts Burglary At Neighbor's Town Of Poughkeepsie Home
A 55-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly being caught in the act of breaking into an occupied home while a neighbor witnessed the event. The attempted burglary was reported around 9:52 p.m., Sunday, July 21, at a home on Point Street in New Hamburg, said Town of Poughkeepsie Police Capt. Kevin Faber. Metro-North Rate Hike Takes Effect
The nearly four-percent rate increase approved by MTA officials in February went into effect on Easter Sunday, April 21. Commuters who purchase a monthly ticket, now more than $460, to use the Hudson line from Poughkeepsie, New Hamburg and Beacon will see no increase either. Monthly and weekly ticket buyers will see an increase of no more than 3.85 percent and there will be no increase for weekly tickets of $147 or more. Irish eyes will be smiling throughout the area during St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday, though not as much on any Metro-North Railroad lines, where booze is banned on one of the busiest drinking days of the year.
