Avoid Unnecessary Travel As State Expects Heavy Snow, Hochul Says Gov. Kathy Hochul has urged New Yorkers to avoid unnecessary travel as two weather systems are expected to bring heavy snow and strong winds. Hochul said that New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley regions are expected to see up to six inches or more of snow, and wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph, overnight Thursday, Jan. 6, through the morning of Friday, Jan. 7. Home Destroyed During Height Of Severe Thunderstorms In Hudson Valley A Hudson Valley family lost their home after a large tree took off the back half of the house during an intense thunderstorm. The incident took place around 3 p.m., Tuesday, June 8, in Orange County when a series of storms with high winds moved through sending the large tree crashing into the home at 8 Carpenter Road in Chester. The owner of the home, Rick Collazo, told Rockland Video he and his wife had just arrived home when the tree fell on the back of the residence, his two sons, one who is autistic, were inside at the time. Storm With Damaging Winds Prompts All-Hands Response From Fire Departments, Utility Companies Some 500 residents across the area dealing with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and stay home orders remain without power following the storm system that ripped through the area. East Fishkill Fire Department's Roof Ripped Off By Wind Gusts A large copper roof was ripped off the Hopewell Hose Fire Company firehouse by high winds that kept firefighters and police busy all afternoon with emergency calls.  No one was injured when the roof at the East Fishkill firehouse off Route 376 came off around 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25 but despite the damage, the department said they are still responding to calls. "This evening, the wind got the best of us," the department said on Facebook. "Luckily no one was injured and we’re still able to respond to calls."
