Thompson, the military college's 25th head coach, has signed a five-year contract awarding him $175,000 each year, according to live5news.com.

Thompson had spent the past two season as the football team's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks/B-Backs coach, according to a statement from the school. His physical rushing attack produced 27 individual 100-yard rushing games in that time, including a single-season program-record 14 in 2015.

The new head coach said he intends to build upon the success the team has had in recent years.

"This is a fantastic day for me and my family," Coach Thompson said in a statement. "I'm honored to be the new head coach at The Citadel and want to thank (Athletic Director) Jim Senter, Lt. Gen. (John) Rosa, (college president) and the rest of the search committee for this opportunity. I'm looking forward to continuing the success we have begun to establish within the program, and it is important to me that we maintain continuity to give our cadet-athletes the best chance to succeed on the field and in life."

Thompson replaces Mike Houston, who left The Citadel to coach the team at James Madison University. He is the son of former Poughkeepsie football coach Keith Thompson.
