A suspect who returned to the scene of his crime after allegedly stealing $3,000 from a Hudson Valley gas station was busted by state police with cocaine and an unlawful vehicle in Dutchess County.

New York State Police troopers responded to a Gulf gas station on Route 44 in Washington on Dec. 21 last year, where there were reports of a larceny after a suspect stole the cash from the counter, which had been left unattended by a store clerk.

An investigation determined that 59-year-old Sharon, Conn. resident Clifford Atkins was a suspect, but he was located out of the state. Akins returned to the same Route 44 Gulf station on Wednesday, where he was placed under investigation.

Police said that Atkins was in possession of stolen property, a small amount of cocaine and he was operating his vehicle with four active suspensions.

Atkins was arrested at the gas station and charged with a felony count of third-degree grand larceny, as well as criminal possession of stolen property aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and criminal possession of a controlled substance, all misdemeanors.

Following arraignment in the Town of Union Vale Court, Atkins was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond. He is due to appear in the Town of Washington Court on Feb. 27 to answer the charges.
