The distraught 29-year-old, who was threatening to jump, had walked to the center of the bridge and was clinging to a railing on its south side, police said.
Two eastbound lanes of the bridge had to be shut down during the incident, police said.
Members of the state police’s Crisis Intervention Team, with the help of Newburgh officers, talked to the man for more than two hours. He apparently was despondent over marital and personal issues, police said.
The unidentified man eventually climbed back onto the pedestrian walkway and was taken into custody without further incident, police said.
He was taken to the Orange County Regional Medical Center for evaluation, police said.
Assisting in the rescue were the state police’s Special operations Response Team, the state police’s aviation unit, and the City of Newburgh’s Fire Department’s Rescue Boat Division.
