Sheriff: Fishkill Man Faces Drug, Other Charges After Fleeing Traffic Stop

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Fishkill man, who police said fled after being pulled over for a license plate violation in Poughkeepsie, is facing numerous charges, including driving while impaired by drugs.

Matthew L. Garcia, 24, was arrested by Dutchess County sheriff’s deputies with the help of Poughkeepsie authorities on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Police said Garcia jumped out of his car and tried to run away, but didn’t get far.

Garcia was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, seventh-degree possession of a controlled substance and possession of a hypodermic instrument, police said.

He was also charged with driving with a suspended registration and without a license, police said. Garcia had already logged 17 suspensions, police said.

All the charges were misdemeanors, police said.

Garcia, who was also slapped with a number of traffic violations, was processed and handed over to state police who had an active warrant out for his arrest.

Police did not specify what that warrant entailed.
