John Townsend Oliver, 85, Of Poughkeepsie

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- John Townsend Oliver died Dec. 31 at his home in Poughkeepsie. He was 85.

He was born July 13, 1930, in Somers Point, N.J., the son of the late John and Ann Oliver. 

He was a former member of the Wappingers Falls United Methodist Church and the Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church. 

He served his country in the U.S. Army. He then went on to work for IBM in Poughkeepsi,e where he was employed for more than 40 years, retiring as a project manager. 

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ida Oliver; children David Oliver of Poughkeepsie and Donna Oldfield and her husband Thomas of Shirley, Mass.; grandchildren CPT Jason T. Oliver and his wife Katie, Rachael Oliver and fiancé Matthew Martin and Tamera, Thomas, Samantha and Alexandra Oldfield; great-grandchildren Cadence and Charles Oliver; cousin Shirley “Gee Gee” Van Nosdall; sister Marge Martin and several nieces and cousins.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Parmele Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie. 

A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church, 2381 New Hackensack Road, Poughkeepsie. Interment will follow in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery with military honors.
