The department said the technique is used to entice people to answer their phones rather than let the unknown calls go to voicemail. The software and technology these scammers use are often difficult to track at the local level, officers said.

Residents receiving these calls should never give personal information over the phone. Always be on alert for the numerous phone scams and frauds that are circulating nationwide.

If you receive information that your personal phone number is being used by scammers, report it to your local police or in East Fishkill at 845-221-2111. The department will forward the information to the New York State Attorney Generals office.
