Pair Of Dutchess Towns Listed Among New York's Top Places To Live

When most people think of New York, they think immediately think of New York City. But according to a ranking by Cities Journal, there are 16 great small communities in the state, and two are in Dutchess and one is in Rockland.

A listing of the top 16 cities in New York ranks Hyde Park at No. 7, partly due to the number of mansions and historic homes including the Franklin D. Roosevelt home.

At No. 7, the town of Hyde Park is described as the perfect place to get up-close and personal with history. The website, says a drive up the historic Route 9 takes you past the former homes of Franklin D. Roosevelt as well as the country palace of Frederick William Vanderbilt, in addition to several others listed on the town’s official website.

At No. 9, Red Hook is dubbed a town with quirky features such as the residency of the Red Hook Society for the Apprehension and Detention of Horse Thieves, which still holds annual meetings. The town also offers a village center that evokes “home town main street America,” and the look of a much larger municipality due to the influx of travelers to the area.

Coming in at No. 16, Pearl River, a hamlet in Orangetown, has been dubbed by the “The New York Times” as a spot that wasn’t as trendy as its neighbors and a town great for families. The town has a reputation for welcoming families into its neighborhoods, a wonderful downtown that is perfect for young couples and families and temperatures that offer an almost perfect balance of warm and freezing.
