The name of the woman who apparently jumped to her death from the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge Sunday evening has been released by state police.

A driver reported seeing a woman leaning on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, said Melissa McMorris with the New York State police.

"By the time police and fire arrived the woman had already jumped from the bridge," she said.

A subsequent investigation revealed that 48-year-old Melissa Zukowski of Beacon had jumped off of the bridge into the Hudson River prior to police arriving on scene.

Both the City of Beacon and Newburgh firefighters searched for the woman for two hours before locating her body. Her car was found on the side of the road, she added.

At roughly the same time, City of Poughkeepsie police received a report of a man jumping from Mid-Huson Bridge, said Det. Lt. Matt Clark.

Again, a passing motorist had called in the report, he said.

Police and fire officials, with help from the New York State police searched for more than hour before giving up the search with no results, said City of Poughkeepsie Fire Chief Mark Johnson.
