The painting was created by local artist Clinton Wilde Clapp. The view appears to be looking south down today's route 9D from Main Street.
Clapp was born in Wappingers Falls in 1831. He had a technical education -- today he’d be an engineer. As a Sunday school teacher, he was noted for “chalk talks,” and when he retired in the 1880s, he took up painting. All of the 10 paintings the library knows about were done in 1883 and 1884.
In total, six of Clapp’s paintings are displayed at Grinnell Library, 2642 E. Main St., Wappingers Falls. To view them online, click here.
