FISHKILL, N.Y. – Although swimming was probably the last thing on their minds, a gaggle of teenage girls just happened to pick the perfect spot to cool down their “Bieber Fever” in 2009.
They screamed, cried and clutched each other as the then-15-year-old Canadian pop sensation Justin Bieber, who turns 23 Wednesday, took to the tiny Pepsi Stage at Fishkill’s Splashdown Beach, aka America’s Biggest Little Water Park.
Looking very much like the skinny kid he was back then, the Biebs rocked his signature bangs, a black hoodie and sneakers as he crooned “One Less Lonely Girl” and the crowd swooned.
‘Lonely Girl” was written and produced by Bieber mentor Usher and others. It was released exclusively to iTunes as the second single from Bieber’s debut release, “My World” that fall.
The singer was embarrassed several years ago when a video of him singing a racist version of the song emerged, according to TMZ.com.
Actually, TMZ.com reported, Bieber, then 14 or 15, had just seen a video online in which a comedian had parodied the song, replacing the word “girl” with a racist slur.
At the time, he thought he was just repeating a joke, but realized almost immediately that not only was it not funny, but that it was “hurtful” and “stupid,” he told TMZ.com.
Bieber has since taken responsibility for the video and has apologized.
The video was just one blip in the Biebs’ reportedly long timeline of troubles which includes an infamous episode where the singer had to fork over more than $80,000 to a neighbor in California after egging his home.
Bieber has taken serious steps in an attempt to walk away from his bad boy past, but legal woes seem to have surfaced as recently as this month when he was named as a suspect in a 2016 dust-up at a basketball game in Cleveland, according to a report by The Sun.
It must have been more carefree, innocent times on July 31, 2009, when Bieber tweeted to Beliebers: “Just pulling up to Splashdown Beach Waterpark in Fishkill NYC. I’m gonna perform and then hit the waterslide!”
