Falcone, an 18-year veteran of the Poughkeepsie Police Department, dedicated his life to protecting the people he served. On Feb.18, 2011, he was fatally shot in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence incident. His sacrifice saved the life of a 3-year-old at the scene. For this selfless and heroic act, he posthumously received the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor. The medal is awarded by the president of the United States to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect human life.
“This is such a great way to honor Detective Falcone and all that he believed in. John was a selfless individual who was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need,” said acting Police Chief Tom Pape.
This is the sixth blood drive held in his memory with a total of 414 units of blood donated since the first memorial blood drive was held.
“Detective Falcone gave up his life to save others,” said Sonja Ronovech, district manager of donor recruitment, American Red Cross Blood Services, New York-Penn Region. “We are grateful to the city of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the community for honoring his memory by donating blood so that others can live.”
The Poughkeepsie Police Department and Fraternal Order of Police encourage members of law enforcement and emergency responders who served with Falcone, and members of the community who want to give, to donate at the memorial blood drive.
