Israeli Journalist Speaks At Poughkeepsie's Vassar College

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Longtime Israeli journalist and author, Ari Shavit will discuss “The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel” Tuesday, April 5 at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie.

Shavit authored the 2013 New York Times bestseller “My Promised Land: the Triumph and Tragedy of Israel,” which combines interviews, memoir and straightforward history to relate Israel’s story. 

He will discuss current Israeli matters including the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict at 5:30 p.m. in the Students’ Building second floor auditorium. 

Sponsored by the Jewish Studies program, the event is free and open to the public.

Shavit is known for challenging the dogmas of both the political right and left on the roles of Israel and Zionism in the 21st century. 

Since 1995 he has written for Israel’s newspaper of record Haaretz, where he currently serves as a columnist and editorial board member. 

He is also a leading commentator on Israeli public television. 

In the 1980s Shavit wrote for the progressive weekly Koteret Rashit, and in the early 1990s he was chairperson of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel.
