Retired Police Sergeant Who Served For Decades In Westchester Dies A police department in Westchester has announced the death of one of its former members who spent his life serving his community and country.  Dutchess County resident Andrew Fischer, Sr., a retired Eastchester Police sergeant, died on Tuesday, April 9 at the age of 84, according to his obituary. Fischer, an Air Force veteran who served during the Vietnam War era, joined the department in 1964 and served until his retirement in 1987 after 23 years, according to Eastchester Police. War Dog Memorial Planned For Lasdon Park In Northern Westchester Lasdon Park, located on Route 35 in Katonah, will soon be the home to a new war dog memorial. Westchester County Executive George Latimer made the announcement on Wednesday, March 13, also known as National K-9 Veterans Day. In total, more than $30,000 has been raised by Friends of Lasdon Park & Arboretum to erect a memorial statue that will be dedicated to military hero dogs. The sculpture is a life-size depiction of Chips, a World War II War Dog. Stray Elephant Strolls Off Sanctuary, Onto Road In Hudson Valley An elephant that survived the Vietnam War took a Veterans' Day stroll off an animal sanctuary in the Hudson Valley and onto a local road before New York State Police quickly responded and helped escort her back home. The incident occurred Sunday night in Orange County. Troopers from the Middletown barracks responded to a roadway alongside a field near the Sanctuary for Animals in Westtown, where they found the wandering tusker. Vietnam Veteran From Westchester Ralph Giordano Dies At 70 Westchester native Ralph J. Giordano, 70, died Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Kindred Hospital in Melbourne, Florida. Ralph was born in Mount Vernon. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and had been an Operating Engineer for the City of New York prior to his retirement.
