The Ossining Police Department is investigating an apparent noose that was found at a popular local park. The village issued an update at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 after becoming aware of a string hanging from a tree in Louis Engel Waterfront Park that appeared to be tied in a noose. Ossining Mayor Victoria Gearity said that police immediately began an investigation and the chief has met with members of the local clergy and NAACP. Innovative Anti-Littering Campaign Launched In Ossining
The Village of Ossining has implemented a new and innovative anti-littering campaign intended to serve as a model for all Hudson Valley municipalities. The campaign, called “The Little Big Picture,” was launched by the Village of Ossining’s Downtown Development Fund Council. Lost $10M State Grant, Late Campaign Finance Reports Spark Debate In Ossining Mayoral Race
Mayoral candidates in the Village of Ossining clashed over the village's inability to receive a $10 million state economic redevelopment grant. On her website, Ossining Mayor Victoria Gearity claimed that village Trustee Omar Herrera, who is challenging her for mayor on Tuesday, Nov. 6, jeopardized the village’s chances of being awarded a Downtown Revitalization Initiative Grant from the MidHudson Region of the Regional Economic Development Councils (REDC). Earlier this year, Herrera proposed a building moratorium for Ossining. “The REDC will only entrust $10M to a community with leader…

An Ossining 29-year-old seeking a seat on the Village Board withdrew his candidacy this week after backlash over a dozen racist and misogynistic tweets became public. Political newcomer David Kezafrika, who was seeking one of the two open village trustee seats while running on the Working Families Party (WFP) line, came under scrutiny after TheExaminerNews.com published several posts Kezafrika admitted making on a Twitter account. Kezafrika later apologized, saying: “It was never my intention to offend or otherwise add to the discourse of adversity and hatred that is already too prevalent …

Village Hall In Northern Westchester Becomes First In State To Install Gender-Neutral Signage
A village in Northern Westchester has become the first municipality in the state to install gender-neutral signage in all its facilities. The idea came at an Ossining Documentary and Discussion Series program, when “it occurred to Mayor Victoria Gearity that the Village may have a role to play in improving the lives of transgender and gender neutral people," the village said. The policy for single-person bathrooms was proposed last month, and unanimously approved by the Village Board on July 18. According to officials, “The Village of Ossining has long considered itself a model of di…

This Northern Westchester Village Proposes 'Gender Neutral' Bathrooms
Is it progressive thinking, or a sign of the times? Ossining Mayor Victoria Gearity proposed that the Village of Ossining become the first community in the state to adopt "gender neutral" signage for all public restrooms. If the policy is approved, a single-occupant bathroom in Village Hall may be the first public government building in the region -- and possibly the state -- to have a gender-neutral bathroom. "All are welcome in Ossining,” Gearity said. The proposal calls for only single occupant bathrooms to be declared gender-neutral. In the New York Assembly, there …
