These Westchester High School Seniors Named Regeneron Scholars Thirty-two high school seniors from Westchester are among the top 300 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2023, regarded as the nation’s oldest and most prestigious scholastic science and math competition, the Society for Science announced on Tuesday, Jan. 10. The 300 will be awarded $2,000 each and their schools will be awarded $2,000 for each enrolled scholar. Northern Westchester Native Who Was All-America Collegiate Athlete Dies At Age 48 A Northern Westchester native who was a standout athlete in both high school and college has died. Alison Relyea, who grew up in Briarcliff and graduated in 1992 from the Hackley School in Tarrytown, was 48 years old, according to her obituary. She died on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Evelyn’s House hospice facility in Creve Coeur, Missouri. For the past 11 years, she lived in Chesterfield, Missouri, her obituary said. Zack is creating a COVID-19 Memorial Garden for Northern Westchester Hospital healthcare workers. According to the Hackley School student, the goal is to build and fill 27 six-feet-by-three-feet raised garden beds to grow produce in the spring. The crops will provide food for patients in need and for those in the surrounding area who face food insecurity—especially in times of COVID-19. …

Police Officer In Westchester Dies At 33 A 33-year-old police officer in Westchester died unexpectedly at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville. Thomas Goff, who had been with the Yonkers Police Department for the past three and half years, died on Saturday, March 30, according to an obituary by Whalen & Ball Funeral Home.  The Yonkers Police Department said on its Facebook page: "We lost a valued member of our department, he will be sorely missed." These Westchester Students Named National Merit Semifinalists Some of Westchester County’s best and brightest students were among those chosen as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, which celebrates academic achievement in high school students. On Wednesday, 16,000 high school seniors were chosen from around the country. Those 16,000 will soon be pared to 7,500 finalists, who will be picked to receive upwards of $31 million in scholarships, which will be announced next spring as they prepare to continue their educations in college. Westchester Student, Among Best Fencers In America, Eyes Event In Poland After winning bronze at USA Fencing's North American Cup last weekend, 10-year-old Shaun Kim of Greenwich is headed to Wroclaw, Poland to compete in his first international fencing competition. Shaun, a student at the Hackley School in Tarrytown, is currently ranked 11th in the nation in Youth-10 Boys Saber. He started fencing when he was seven encouraged by his father, who always admired the sport and enjoyed watching his college friend compete at Princeton University.  Shaun took to fencing quickly and began competing just last year.
