These Westchester High School Seniors Named Regeneron Scholars
Thirty-two high school seniors from Westchester are among the top 300 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2023, regarded as the nation’s oldest and most prestigious scholastic science and math competition, the Society for Science announced on Tuesday, Jan. 10. The 300 will be awarded $2,000 each and their schools will be awarded $2,000 for each enrolled scholar. The Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars were selected from 1,949 applications from 627 high schools across 48 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and four other countries. Teacher, Coach, Principal From Somers 'Known For His Unconditional Kindness' Dies
A beloved educator and coach from Northern Westchester known for making a lasting impression on his students has died. Joseph Troy of Somers died on Thursday, Nov. 3 at the age of 83, according to his obituary. Born in 1939 in New York City, Troy graduated from St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Barrytown in 1957 and earned his bachelor's degree in Biology at Catholic University in 1962 as well as his master’s degree in Education and Doctoral Studies from New York University, his obituary said. Some schools in the Hudson Valley have earned top marks in 2021 by being recognized with National Blue Ribbon status. US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona announced 325 schools across the country were recognized for their overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among students. 27 From Westchester Named Regeneron Science Scholars
A total of 31 of the Hudson Valley's best and brightest high school seniors were among 300 chosen to compete with some of the nation’s top students in the Regeneron Science Talent Search competition. The 300 scholars were chosen out of 1,760 applications that were received from 611 high schools across 49 states. The 300 hail from 193 American and international high schools, Puerto Rico, and two other countries. Of the scholars, 27 came out of Westchester, with three in Putnam, and one in Dutchess. Rita MacDonald Cooney, 90, a retired Briarcliff High School Teacher died peacefully in her sleep on Dec. 12, 2018 Born in Ossining on May 8, 1928. Some of Westchester County’s best and brightest students were among those chosen as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, which celebrates academic achievement in high school students. On Wednesday, 16,000 high school seniors were chosen from around the country.
