Forced to play Cornwall with little preparation due to Super Storm Sandy and a compressed postseason scheduled last fall, Somers lost 34-12 to the Section 9 representative and is looking for another crack at the upstate Dragons.
Somers (9-1) won its second straight Section 1 Class A title with a victory over Rye last weekend and will meet Section 9's Cornwall (9-1) in a rematch of last year's state quarterfinal Friday, Nov. 15 at 9 p.m. at Dietz Stadium in upstate Kingston.
The Tuskers' defense led the way in a 20-7 victory over previously unbeaten Rye, which had been scoring at a high rate all season before being stopped by Somers.
Matt Morgante Matt Arita and Tyler DeVito have led coach Tony DeMatteo's defense against a high-scoring Cornwall team.
Somers uses several running backs behind quarterback Tim Cousin. Tim Fazzinga and Matt Morgante lead the running attack that must control the clock and keep the ball from Cornwall. The Tuskers are a perfect balance of offense and defense, scoring 39 points per game and allowing just 11.
Cornwall features option quarterback Mike White and his prime receiver Chris Bauer who have led the team to an average of 39 points per game, while allowing 18.
The winner advances to meet the winner of Section 2’s Queensbury and Section 10’s Massena quarterfinal next Friday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. at Dietz Stadium in the state semifinals.
