Somers Basketball Heads To Mahopac For Tough Matchup

SOMERS, N.Y. – The Somers High School boys basketball team has won nine straight games. But on Tuesday, the Tuskers will face a team with just as much momentum.

Somers will tangle with the Mahopac Indians on the road at 5 p.m. Mahopac has won eight in a row, with the latest victory a 47-40 home win against Carmel.

This game was originally scheduled for last Wednesday, but a snowstorm forced officials to postpone the tipoff.

The Tuskers defeated John Jay, 54-51 in their latest game, to extend their winning streak. Yet again, John Decker found a way to lift his team to victory with a 38-point performance.

Somers may boast a winning streak slightly longer than Mahopac’s, but the Indians are certainly capable of ending Somers’ run. Brendan Hynes has been a standout for Mahopac all season. He poured in 37 points and grabbed 10 rebounds earlier this month against Brewster, then registered another double-double with 27 points and 10 boards in the Indians’ first of two wins against Carmel.

Hynes has nearly averaged a double-double this season and has averaged more than 20 points per game this year.

The Tuskers will also have to focus on Ryan Simone, who has shown at times this season that he can be the difference-maker in a game. He finished with 21 points and 21 rebounds against John Jay in early January.

Decker has undoubtedly been impressive in the past two months, but Somers will likely need a second player to emerge to knock off the Indians.
