Somers Students Looking Forward to School

SOMERS, N.Y. - Some of Somers' most popular summer hangouts saw a final burst of activity the Friday before Labor Day, as students on vacation were enjoying the last few hours of freedom.

However, going back to school isn't all bad for many local kids. Nine-year-old Talia, going into fourth grade, is happy school is starting again.

“I get to see my friends," she said.

Seven-year-old Kyle, going into second grade, wasn't as pleased.

“I don’t like school,” he said. “But I like the art stuff.”

The Altieri family visited King Kone after a stop at Staples for school supplies. Five-year-old Anthony, going into first grade, said he was looking forward to seeing a good friend. Elisa, going into eighth grade, said, she doesn't like the number eight while her little brother Michael, going into fifth grade, was also a bit negative.

“I just don’t like school,” he said, “But fifth grade is the best. We get to go to a pool party at the end of the year.”

A group of friends basking in the last days of summer at "the truck" in Reis Park had other complaints.

“I’m not looking forward to the homework or the food,” said 15-year-old Jared Mackey. “But I do look forward to soccer, basketball and lacrosse. And I’m looking forward to biology with Mrs. Louch. She’s a great teacher.”

Evan Mazzola, 9, said school doesn't have the best culinary options.

“I don’t like the food. The hotdogs are like rubber," he said. "You can bounce them. But math is the best.”

Craig Casey, 15, isn’t looking forward to giving up his summer schedule.

“I don’t want to wake up early. And we don’t get enough breaks,” he said. “I don’t want to get homework. But I do want to see my friends. I’m looking forward to the after school activities, like basketball, football and lacrosse.”
