Matthew Carr, the school district's director of human resources and student services, told Daily Voice that the schools reopened and had a "very normal day."
Carr added that all of the buses that were damaged - the total was roughly 28 out of a total fleet of roughly 60 - have been repaired.
In an email to parents sent out prior to Tuesday's start of classes, Somers Schools Superintendent Raymond Blanch disclosed that fire extinguishers from the fleet were used to spray graffitti of the the nearby pavement, which included a swastika and swear words. The buses themselves had punctured tires and broken windows.
"Certainly, we are all disheartened with such an unthinkable act," Blanch wrote in his letter. "I have talked with many employees and parents that are in disbelief such a travesty would happen in Somers."
Blanch also wrote about the effort to identify who is behind the vandalism.
"I want to assure you we are working with law enforcement to do everything we can to determine who is responsible for such a clear attack on the very beliefs we stand for as a school district."
Additionally, the superintendent compared the vandalism with previous adversities that the Somers school district has faced.
"In the past our school district and community have been faced with significant challenges and as a collective entity we have risen above them all," he wrote. "I am absolutely certain that once again we will collectively rise above this atrocity."
