Somers HS Honors Class Of 2016 At 75th Commencement

SOMERS, N.Y. -- Somers High School bid farewell to its Class of 2016 on a sunny Tuesday. The event was the school's 75th-annual commencement, a milestone in Tusker history.

The commencement took place on the field of Primrose Elementary School, which is adjacent to the high school campus.

High School Principal Mark Bayer noted the symbolism in location of the event, as Primrose was a place where many graduates first became Somers students.

“We could not have asked for a more beautiful setting and a more poignant location for our graduation than on the field of the very place where many of our students began their careers in the Somers Central School District.”

Bayer added that a new tradition was started this year, where graduates did a rehearsal march through the halls of Primrose. Current elementary students watched and cheered their older counterparts, Bayer noted.

Siya Chauhan was selected as the 2016 valedictorian, while Maya Rebekah Berfinger was named as this year's salutatorian.
