Somers Education Foundation Honors the Callans

SOMERS, N.Y. – The Somers Education Foundation’s largest annual fundraiser, The Parent Prom, is just around the corner, and the highlight of the evening will be the foundation’s tribute to five outstanding citizens for their volunteer service. Among the five are Judi and Cesar Callan.

“I was shocked when I heard about it,” said Judi Callan. “For me, it’s been a labor of love. I did it for selfish reasons. We have four children, and I know it takes a village to raise a child.”

Judi Callan thinks that perhaps her part on the team that formed the Somers PTA Council has been her greatest achievement.

“There are five PTAs in Somers, including the Special Ed PTA,” she said. “When I was president of the Primrose PTA, I had kids in three different schools. We formed the PTA Council to address issues as an entire district. It acts as a sounding board, sharing information and working on subjects of interest to all the PTA groups.”

Judi’s husband, Cesar, thinks his biggest contribution was his involvement in founding FC Somers, the soccer club that gives Somers children the chance to learn and play soccer in an enjoyable, comradely and competitive environment.

“I’ve had a good time coaching,” Callan said. “It gives me nothing but joy to teach the kids and learn with them. I also learned how to be a good parent.

“I’ve met a lot of people along the way. I think our club is a success because everyone is included. It’s the inclusion factor. It’s ‘our soccer team’ and ‘our community.’ ”

Cesar Callan has been coaching soccer for 19 years. “I saw a void and a need for soccer coaches, so I went out with my bag of balls. The club has been rolling ever since.”

Primary sponsors of The Parent Prom are the Hope Mazzola Group, The Somers Record and Dr. Richard Bridgham. Co-chairs are Hope Mazzola, Bruce Heller and Mel Reyes.

Prom night is Saturday, April 28, from 7 p.m. to midnight at Armonk’s Brynwood Country Club. The invitation says prom attire is not required and suggests, “Festive attire (anything goes, even a Hawaiian shirt).” Tickets are $110 per person, $95 for teachers.
