Somers Education Foundation Honors Missy and Nick Vece

SOMERS, N.Y. — The Somers Education Foundation’s largest annual fundraiser, the Parent Prom, is coming up this Saturday. One of the evening’s highlights will be a tribute to five outstanding members for their volunteer services.

The final recipients of this year’s tribute are Nick and Missy Vece. (The Daily Somers has already written about Cesar and Judi Callan and Roy Arnesen. )

As their three children progressed through the Somers school system, the Veces gave many hours and much energy to the educational system: She with PTA organizations and ultimately as president of the Somers Board of Education, and he as a fundraiser and coach for youth sports programs.

“I didn’t expect this, but I’m very happy and proud,” said Nick Vece. “I don’t do it for the accolades, I do it for the kids. If I could make a living at it, I would do it. When the kids see you at school, they look up to you. They consider you a friend. It’s a nice feeling.

“We never pretend the kids are going on to the major leagues,” Vece said of his work with athletes. “If we can give them confidence and a higher sense of self-esteem, we’re doing our job.”

Missy Vece said one of her greatest rewards as president of the Board of Education comes at graduation, when she hands each student a diploma. “When you shake their hand, it’s symbolic of the hand you have had in their 12 years of education.”

The Parent Prom takes place from 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday at Armonk’s Brynwood Country Club. The invitation suggests festive attire. The Brynwood Country Club is on Route 22 in Armonk. Tickets at the door are $110 per person, $95 for teachers. You can also register online.
