Maureen's Hoops for Hope at Kennedy High

SOMERS, N.Y. - Friends, family and fellow students of Maureen McAvoy will be pitted against each other in the Fifth Annual celebration of “Maureen’s Hoops for Hope” on December 17 at Kennedy High School.

Maureen was a member of the Kennedy Class of 2006. In October 2007 she died after a long and brave battle against brain cancer. Among the tournament’s organizers is Maureen’s sister, Siobhan, a 2007 graduate of Kennedy. “It’s been five years since my sister died, and not a day goes by that I don’t think of her and miss her dearly,” said Siobhan. “But to know that those same five years later, her friends and family are still coming together to make a difference in the fight against childhood cancer is comforting.”

Teams of Kennedy alumni and faculty will join her family and friends in the five-on-five tournament. Food and other refreshments will be plentiful and T-shirts will be sold. A 50-50 raffle will add another dimension.

The suggested admission price is $7 at the door. All proceeds will be donated to childhood brain tumor research at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

The game is on in the gym at Kennedy High from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday the 17th of December. Go and shoot some hoops, or just go and cheer -- in memory of Maureen.
