During her life, Plunkett, who passed away at 74-years-old, helped tens of thousands of Westchester County residents through her charitable works, serving in varying capacities, acting as vice chair of her alma mater Marymount College Board of Trustees, the Tarrytown Board of Trustees and on the boards of the Fareri Children’s Hospital Foundation and AMIC Clearview School.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who oversaw the service alongside countless bishops and deacons, gave the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to Plunkett last week. He said that despite her fragile state, she remained as strong and resolute as ever.
“When I told her that she had been struggling for the past 12 years (and now the struggle was over), she smiled and said, ‘yeah, but I got to see my grandkids,’” he said. “That’s the power of faith, family and friendship.”
A woman of great faith, Plunkett was honored by Stepinac High School earlier this year “for her accomplishments as a successful business woman, administrator, public servant and an active charitable volunteer.” She was an administrator at Plunkett and Jaffee Group for nearly three decades alongside her husband, William.
During her eulogy, her daughter Catherine spoke of Plunkett’s eclectic life, highlighting the tight knit relationship of their family, namely that which she shared with her husband. At the request of her son, Timothy, who also spoke, Plunkett was led out of St. Patrick’s to “one last round of applause,” while “God Bless America,” a song close that helped her family through some of the hard times, was sung.
“Through tragedy, she managed to bring the family closer,” Catherine said. “Just think about that.”
