Somers Walks for Stroke on Sunday

SOMERS, N.Y. – Approximately every 40 seconds, someone in the United States suffers a stroke.

Despite her healthy diet and active lifestyle, Somers’ 52-year-old Annie Mitchell suddenly experienced a stroke a few years ago. Causes of stroke vary. In Mitchell’s case, it was a blood clot.

Mitchell was fortunate to receive immediate medical attention, followed by conscientious therapy. Her daughters, Lisa, 24, and Valerie (Goodwin), 29, now celebrate her recovery by hosting an annual three-mile walk to benefit the National Stroke Association.

The sisters are both graduates of Somers High School and Pace University School of Nursing. Both are registered nurses at Northern Westchester Hospital Center. Their mother’s case is obviously not the first they have seen, but it was so close to home it demanded action.

Goodwin points out her mother had no known health issues. For that reason, it is important to raise awareness for everyone, she said.

Last spring, Mitchell’s daughters organized a Somers Walk for Stroke in conjunction with National Stroke Awareness Month in May. The event drew more than 200 walkers and raised close to $9,000. Neighbors, friends and the community were so supportive the sisters decided to make the Somers Walk for Stroke an annual event.

This year, the walk takes place May 20. It starts at Somers High School on Primrose Street and ends at Reis Park. The walk begins at 10 a.m., registration begins at 9 a.m. Thanks to the Somers Lions Club, brunch will be served to walkers and spectators afterwards in the pavilion at Reis Park.

Walkers are asked to make a $25 donation to the National Stroke Association.
