SOMERS, N.Y. -- All schools in Somers were closed Monday after nearly half of the bus fleet was vandalized, according to Matthew Carr, who is the school district's director of human resources and student services.
About 28 buses were affected and the total feet size is roughly 60, Carr said. The bus yard is located behind Somers High School, Carr added. Security cameras are present on the premises and are being reviewed, according to Carr.
Damage included punctured tires, broken windows, and fire extinguishers that were discharged or went missing, Carr said.
Carr said that the buses are operated by Royal Coach Busing, which is the district's contracted vendor.
Replacement materials are being in and repairs are being planned to occur around the clock, Carr told Daily Voice. The goal is to have schools reopen by Tuesday.
A two-hour delay was originally planned before the cancelation, according to the school district.
Somers school bus employees observed that numerous buses were vandalized when they arrived at the bus garage Monday morning, state police said.
State police are continuing to investigate. Carr told Daily Voice that it is not clear when the buses were vandalized.
