SOMERS, N.Y. Several thousand Somers residents lost power during Thursday evenings short but violent storm, but as of 11 a.m. Friday, only about 1,500 of NYSEGs nearly 10,000 Somers customers still were waiting for the outage to end.
Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy advises that everyone should have power back before 1 p.m. Saturday, and many will have their power later today. She has a conference call scheduled with NYSEG at 1:30 p.m.
Murphy said that the Heritage Hills Activity Center is open as a cooling center and a place to recharge laptops and cell phones. Dry ice will be distributed at 5 p.m. at Reis Park. The amount available will depend on how much NYSEG provides.
Anyone with a generator should be aware that generators produce a significant amount of carbon monoxide. If you have a generator, please be sure to close any windows in the area.
Remember, too, to check your electric stove and make sure all the burners are in the off position. People sometimes forget to turn stoves off when the power fails, causing dangerous conditions when the power resumes. Several fires erupted after the October storm because of forgotten stoves.
