SOMERS, N.Y. – The Somers Daily Voice has been recapping some of the most important stories of 2012. Now, here are a few of the things to look forward to in the new year.

  • A major change will be the completion of the new St. Joseph’s Church, adjacent to Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers. The new building will replace the old church on Croton Falls Road in Croton Falls. “I’d like to think it’ll be finished by Easter,” said business manager Richard Casterella. “But it could be March ... or April ... or May ... . Anyway, early spring.”
  • Somers’ popular Reis Park will reopen in the spring, with new lighting in the parking lots, a new concession stand, a refurbished basketball court, redesigned drainage in the baseball fields, and what Parks and Recreation Superintendent Steve Ralston describes as "the best three renovated bathrooms." The improvements should be completed by the third week of April.
  • The Somers Library, long awaiting its new roof, will be showing it off this winter.
  • The Van Tassell House will enjoy a new porch.
  • The Somers Police Department will see its redesigned drainage completed.
  • Anthony Cirieco, former member of the Somers Board of Education, will assume a new role as a member of the Somers Town Board, replacing Richard Benedict, who was an interim appointee when Harry Bolton resigned.
  • A new trustee will be appointed in January to fill Cirieco’s seat on the Somers Board of Education.
  • The Mobil Station on Route 100 will open its new convenience store, nearly four times as big as the old building. “It’s something the town could really use,” said owner Paul Sussman. “We listened to our customers’ ideas for ways to improve it.”
  • The Somers Dog Park will begin construction, “as soon as the weather allows,” said the Parks Department’s Ralston. “We anticipate opening in the spring. We’ve already received proposals for the fencing.”
  • Croton Falls’ Schoolhouse Theater has been undergoing renovations and will be freshly opened for its new season on Feb. 28, with “Ten Unknowns,” written by Tony nominee Jon Robin Baitz. Later in the season, the Schoolhouse will present Neil Simon’s “Last of the Red Hot Lovers.”
  • The Chinese New Year, the Year of the Snake, will be celebrated on Feb. 10. It is the year 4710, 4711 or 4650, depending upon which calendar you consult.
  • Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year (5774) will be celebrated on Sept. 5.
