Somers: Crews Completing Lake Lincolndale Oil-Spill Cleanup

SOMERS, N.Y. -- Lake Lincolndale will remain closed to swimming for the foreseeable future but crews could complete the clean-up within the next several days, Somers officials said Thursday.

Somers officials said Lake Licolndale remains closed this week due to an oil spill but clean-up crews should finish work in the next several days.

Somers officials closed Lake Lincolndale until further notice after an oil tank in the basement of a home on Myrtle Drive leaked out and rain waters from earlier this week caused the spill to leak into the lake.

Representatives from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Westchester County Health Department have responded to the scene and have hired a company to clean up the spill, but expect the clean-up to last for several more days, Somers Town Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy said Thursday.

"They started raking up the algae, which soaked up the oil and that contaminated algae needs to be removed," Murphy said. "It should take a few more days for them to finish that. Right now we're not sure how long it will be until the beach is opened."

The Health Department will notify residents when Lincolndale Beach is open for swimming once again, Murphy said.

DEC representatives have had conversations with the homeowner about covering the costs of the cleanup, but those discussions have not been finalized, Murphy said.

"DEC hired Tri-State Environmental for the cleanup and I know they're having conversations with the homeowners about the costs," Murphy said.

Representatives with the DEC were not available for comment Thursday.
