Northern Exposure Warmly Greeted in Somers

SOMERS, N.Y. - A new photography club has arrived in Somers and it has been greeted with enthusiasm. Northern Exposure was the brainchild of photographers/friends Mimma Fiorino and Chet Friedman of Somers.

“We just thought it would be fun to start a club and share know-how and learn and teach in a non-competitive environment,” said Fiorino.

Friedman added, “We worried that it would just be Mimma and I, talking to each other at the first meeting. Then we thought if six to 10 people showed up it would be a lot.”

In fact, 28 photographers of all levels arrived at the Somers Library for the first meeting of Northern Exposure on Saturday, all of them happy for the opportunity to meet and share knowledge and experiences. They came from as far away as southern Westchester and Putnam County.

The initial meeting concentrated on figuring out what the club is going to do and how things would be run. Since about 10 members are relatively inexperienced, a pre-meeting class, “Photography 101,” will be taught by Friedman in conjunction with future club meetings.

It was agreed among members that the best way to improve their skills is to dive into it. So members left the meeting with an assignment, to photograph a part of a building or a structure. Though it seemed unexciting to some, it will be a challenge to create a wonderful photograph of an inanimate object.

Members were instructed to email their photos as jpg’s to mimmaphoto@gmail.com. Anyone who wants to join the club at the next meeting is invited to send a photograph as well.

Member Mike Lubchenko said, “I think this new photography club will be very beneficial for everyone from novices to advanced photographers. There’s always something new that you can learn, and in this cooperative environment you’re likely to find someone with different experience and knowledge than your own.”

The next meeting of Northern Exposure will be held at the Somers Library on Saturday, February 11 from 11 a.m. to noon. “Photography 101” will begin at 10 a.m. New members are always welcome.
