No Plans to Close Big Kmart in Yorktown

YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Earlier this week, some customers stumbled upon a sign at the Big Kmart in Yorktown that stated, "Closed until further notice."

Following the closing of 39 Kmart stores in December and the reported possible shut down of 60-80 more, speculation was Sears Holding Corporation had pulled the plug on Yorktown Green's anchor store. Not so fast.

The reason for the store being dark for half a day Tuesday was a blown transformer, according to Sears Holding Corporation spokesperson Kimberly Freely. Big Kmart has been open as scheduled the rest of the week.

Meanwhile, Freely added there currently are no plans to close Big Kmart in Yorktown.

None of the Kmart stores Sears announced in late December were closing were in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut. The company is keeping tabs on its stores as it looks to save $140 to $170 million.

"While our past practice has been to keep marginally performing stores open while we worked to improve their performance, we no longer believe that to be the appropriate action in this environment," the company stated in a release at the end of 2011.
