Kindergartners Learn About "Too Much Noise" in the Library

SOMERS, N.Y. - Kindergarten students at the Primrose School are already beginning to learn to read. To reinforce their efforts and “make them feel good about their attempts to read,” the Somers Children’s Library has a book club for kindergarteners. Books are chosen in accordance with the New York State literacy standards.

On Monday about two dozen budding readers gathered together to enjoy Susan Margaret Chapman’s “Too Much Noise in the Library.”

The story is about all of the background noises in a library. Computer keys go “clickety-click,” pages go “rustle-rustle,” books go “kerplop-kerplop.” As the children read the book they make the appropriate noises, verbally and with props. Naturally, they find it very amusing.

There is always some sort of craft activity and an appropriate snack provided through the generosity of The Friends of the Library. Children's Librarian Vicki DiSanto says, “I want to make kids aware that books can be fun.

“There is a wide range of reading abilities in the kindergarten grade. The range closes as children get older,” DiSanto explains.

The children are not there to show how well they can read. “They just have to come with the will to make good friends and become better readers. And there is never any homework.”

The Kindergarten Book Club meets on Mondays from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. throughout the school year in six-week sessions. The first session is September 12 to October 17. The second session is November 7 to December 12.

Next week’s Kindergarten Book Club choice is “Oodles of Animals,” by Lois Ehlert.
