The traffic signal installation project will include the addition of a left-turn lane on the southbound approach of Route 139 to accommodate traffic turning into the high school driveway, as well as new pavement markings and highway signage. A turn lane at the driveway of the high school will also be added and drainage issues addressed.
Work is underway with the bulk of construction planned for the summer months while school is out of session. Construction will require temporary lane closures, but the road will remain open. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.
"Over the past few years, the volume of traffic has increased significantly in Somers," State Sen. Terrence Murphy said. "This important safety measure will help protect our children and families. Installing a traffic light near the high school will improve the flow of traffic, reduce incidents of speeding and have a positive effect on reducing the number of traffic accidents."
