Lasdon’s Sustainable Garden Sale on the Horizon

SOMERS, N.Y. – The highly popular annual “Sustainable Garden” plant sale at the Lasdon Park and Arboretum is coming up on Saturday, May 19. Hundreds of plants, especially chosen for their resistance to deer and drought and/or for their attractions to “good bugs,” butterflies and hummingbirds, will be available at reasonable prices, ready to be planted in the garden or in your favorite containers.

Knowledgeable and experienced gardeners will be available to suggest companion plants, answer your questions and help you choose exactly the right color, form, fragrance, texture and light and soil compatibility. The Back Porch, a bluegrass ensemble, will provide the background music and interactive fun projects will entertain the kids while you make decisions.

Among the local vendors on hand to supplement your needs will be Stone Barns, selling compost and mulchl Guy Hodges, selling honey and beeswax productsl Burren Farm, with herbal products; Front Yard Coop, demonstrating mobile chicken coops; Wild Birds Unlimited, selling bird-friendly products; and Mill River Supplies, for all your gardening tools.

The Sustainable Garden sale will be ushered in by a special preview celebration on the evening of Friday, May 18. Dubbed “A New Leaf for Lasdon,” the event will honor JoAnn DiRico Trautmann for her contributions to gardening, landscapes and the environment in Westchester. Trautmann is the coordinator of the Master Gardener program at the Westchester Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served and guests will have first pick of the plants for sale. Refreshments will be provided by the Table Local Market and Fountainhead Wines of Bedford Hills, music by the bluegrass band, Mama Tried.

The cocktail party runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include a 20 percent discount on plants.
