Severe thunderstorm watches were in effect for Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess and Rockland counties.
Rain and thunderstorms are expected to begin shortly before 6 p.m. The thunderstorms are expected to last late until midnight, followed by most cloudy skies but with temperatures remaining in the high 70s.
The summer heat wave that has gripped the county since late last week is forecasted to continue until at least Thursday. Temperatures are expected to stay at or above 90 before moderating slightly on Friday.
The National Weather Service said Monday's heat index could soar to as high as 99. It said new rainfall amounts could be between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms. A heat advisory was in effect until 8 p.m.
