A Hudson Valley community still has the lowest vaccination rate in New York as the state looks to hit a 70 percent benchmark to lift most restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Monsey in Rockland County continues to lag behind the rest of the state, with a 17.8 percent vaccination rate as the state begins targeting the zip codes where there has been the most resistance to taking the vaccine. New York City Declares Measles Public Health Emergency In Select ZIP Codes
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency Tuesday, April 9, in select zip codes in Williamsburg, following a measles outbreak affecting the Orthodox Jewish community. As part of the declaration, unvaccinated individuals living in those ZIP codes who may have been exposed to measles will be required to receive the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in order to protect others in the community and help curtail the ongoing outbreak, said the Mayor's office. Community Mourns Death Of Grand Rabbi Of Viznitz Hasidim In Kaser-Monsey
Many in the Hudson Valley are mourning the death of the man who was believed to be the world's oldest rabbi. Monsey residents can expect road closures and heavy traffic as thousands gather early Friday afternoon for the funeral of Rabbi Mordechai Hager, who died at the age of 95. The grand rabbi of the Viznitz Hasidim in Kaser-Monsey died Friday at Mount Sinai Hospital where he had been recovering from a major illness.
