SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- The Scarsdale football team was not pleased with itself following its loss to Clarkstown South on Homecoming Day.
The Raiders fell below .500 after three games, but, more importantly, they faced a crossroads in their season.We knew the season was on the line going into our game with Mahopac, said senior and tri-captain Brandon Berman. There would be no playoffs for us if we lost.Scarsdale would not have to worry about that after a thrilling 28-21 win over Mahopac at home.The Raiders drove 91 yards in the final five minutes and capped it off with an Andy Verboys-to-Anthony Cugini 15-yard touchdown pass with 30 seconds remaining in the game.Scarsdale evened its record at 2-2 and will play at Roy C. Ketcham, Thursday.Our final drive was the epitome of the triple-option offense, said Berman, who along with his offensive linemates, opened holes. We ran the same play, giving it to our fullback, Eric Berman, and we kept getting five-six yards at a time.Once Mahopac realized what Scarsdale was doing, the Indians were still having difficulty stopping the Raiders. When Scarsdale moved within striking distance of Mahopacs goal line, the Raiders caught the Indians by surprise,Anthony was the third check down on that play, Berman said. After he made the catch, he made a couple of nice moves and capped it off.The touchdown elicited a celebration from the Scarsdale fans. Berman and his teammates walked over, after the game, and thanked the 12th man (fans) for their tremendous support.It felt so good, like the perfect high school moment, Berman said. It was so good to play the game and win it, not only for ourselves but also for the fans.
