The NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll, conducted after the latest GOP debate, found that the Texas senator was backed by 29 percent of primary voters and Trump pulled 26 percent.

In January, the same pollsters found that the billionaire real estate mogul and reality show host was 13 points ahead of Cruz, cbsnews.com reported.

However, another new national survey, this one conducted by CBS News found Trump to be way ahead of other Republican hopefuls in nearly every demographic group, with a 17 point lead over Cruz.
