SCARSDALE, N.Y. Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino visited Scarsdale on Wednesday night as part of his Ask Astorino series, touching on a myriad of issues affecting the county and village.
County residents are faced with the highest taxes in the country, according to the executive. Astorino said he plans to worry about the three Ps: protecting taxpayers, preserving essential services and promoting economic growth.
We need to stop the tax madness. Westchester County is the highest taxed county in the United States, he said. Weve seen how detrimental its been. Were driving people out of this county and we need to stop the exodus.
Astorino spoke about a subject thats been on the minds of many Scarsdale for months: the ongoing construction on bridges in the area. The delayed projects have been a longstanding issue in the village.
As youre all aware, there are a couple of bridges going through construction, he said. Were trying to modernize and make safer bridges. We worked with former mayor Carolyn Stevens, have met with some property owners and some of the people who worked in the area. We know its creating a disruption, but this is something that definitely needs to be done.
Following his hour-long speech, Astorino fielded questions from the audience that ranged from affordable housing to school taxes in Mamaroneck and corporate donations toward political campaigns.
There are potential sites that we have identified for low income housing, but nothing is imminent. We wont be bringing in cranes and trucks the next day, there will be time for people to comment on it, he said. I was born and raised here. I just want to take away some of the burden on taxpayers. Thats what were concerned about.
