Scarsdale Residents Report Property, Identity Theft

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – A pair of Scarsdale residents reported that their private account information was stolen to make purchases of nearly $3,000 each, according to police reports.

A Brown Road man, 42, reported March 4 he was notified by an online billing company that someone created a fraudulent account in his name to buy a Hewlett Packard product worth $2,936.66. The company,, did not know whether the product had been shipped to the person.

Police were investigating the reported identity theft, which is a felony. 

Then on Saturday, another Scarsdale resident reported to police that he got a bill from Best Buy that showed he owed $2,841.62 for purchases made on a store credit card. He called Best Buy to cancel the card. A store representative canceled it, then produced a copy of the receipt, which showed three Apple iPads and one year of tech support for one of the iPads were purchased Jan. 4 in Westbury, N.Y., police said. 

The man told police he had applied for a Best Buy card about a year ago when he bought a television but didn’t think he had activated it. Police were investigating the incident.

Also on the police blotter: 

A Scarsdale man reported that his generator was stolen from his Oneida Road home Saturday, police said. The man noticed the generator, worth $600, was missing when he returned home at about 5 p.m. Saturday and the gate to his backyard was open, police said.

He and his wife had left their home at about 1 p.m., police said. Another generator of the same make and model in his backyard was not touched, police said.

Police were investigating the reported petit larceny, a misdemeanor.
