On Friday afternoon, police backup was dispatched to the Scarsdale train station, where an officer was with a woman who had possibly been involved in a crime at DeCicco Market Place, according to a store manager who saw Scarsdale resident Katharena Zanders put items into shopping bags without paying.
Police said that the manager told officers that he saw the woman putting the merchandise into plastic shopping bags, and after being advised to make sure she paid for the item, Zanders still proceeded to leave the store without paying, claiming the merchandise was from Walmart.
After being confronted by the manager and another employee who saw her take two steaks, shampoo bottles and Lysol cleaner, Zanders admitted to placing the items in the bag, but still refused to pay.
According to police, the manager followed Zanders out of the store and found several other unpaid items sticking out of her pocketbook in plain view. Officers were then called to the location and Zanders was arrested and charged with two counts of petit larceny, misdemeanors.
Zanders issued a voluntary statement to police and was released on her own recognizance. She is due back in Scarsdale Justice Court on Wednesday.
