WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - A New Rochelle man took police in Scarsdale on a wild chase last week through several backyards after being busted with a car that had been reported stolen in Mount Vernon.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, police were dispatched to the corner of Post and Dickel Road, following reports of an abandoned car. Upon arrival, police determined that the car had been reported stolen out of Mount Vernon the day before. Officers also reported that the car wasn't occupied and was turned off, with the key in the ignition. There was also a note on the driver’s side window that said “out of gas brb.”

While waiting for the driver, a man - later identified as New Rochelle resident Andre Reid - approached the vehicle carrying two gas cans and a yellow funnel, police said. Reid spoke with the officers, claiming the vehicle was not his, but he was watching it for a friend. After failing to produce ID twice, Reid was asked to face the police car, at which point he took off running.

According to police, after shouting for him to stop, officers chased him north on Post Road, behind an apartment building and then back south across Post Road, down Farley Road. At that point, Reid jumped over a stone wall on Farley Road, leading into the backyards of White Plains residences. One officer continued to chase while the other stood by the stolen car.

Reid would eventually be apprehended in front of a Walton Avenue home in White Plains. Police said that after being transported to Scarsdale Police Headquarters for processing, he stated he suffered from a medical condition and was transported to White Plains Hospital.

Shortly before 9 p.m., Reid was dispatched and placed in a holding cell. During his investigation, he stated that “stated that last night, he saw the car and recognized it to be his uncle’s,” police said. Reid added that “one of his friends had stolen the car, so he stole it from his friend to give back to his uncle.” He further stated that he drove the stolen car in an effort to get to White Plains and when he was on his way back, he ran out of gas.

Reid was charged with a felony count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a stolen vehicle. He was arraigned in Scarsdale Village Court and was remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
