At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Friday night, a 911 emergency call was made to Scarsdale Police Headquarters, with a citizen reporting a potentially intoxicated driver in a green Jeep Cherokee traveling north on Post Road in the direction of the station.
According to Sgt. Michael Siciliano, who responded to the call, as he was exiting Police Headquarters and was walking toward a patrol car to investigate, he spotted a Jeep that matched the description, passing the department.
Responding officers caught up to the driver near Huntington Avenue, and it continued north on Post Road, exceeding the posted 30 mph speed limit. Police said that the driver - later identified as 57-year-old White Plains resident Jose Caamano - was observed switching lanes repeatedly and he initially refused to stop.
A traffic stop was eventually initiated at West Post Road and Walton Avenue in White Plains after police activated their emergency lights, sirens, public address system and air horn.
When officers made contact with Caamano, they reported a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, and his eyes were allegedly glassy and bloodshot. Police said that he was slurring his words when he spoke and stumbled on his feet when told to exit the vehicle. Caamano then failed several Standardized Field Sobriety tests.
Police said that an also-sensor pre-screening test indicated the presence of alcohol on Caamano’s breath, with a reading of .159 percent, nearly double the legal limit of .08 percent. After being arrested, Caamano’s blood alcohol content was registered as .15 percent at Police Headquarters.
Caamano was charged with misdemeanor counts of driving while intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol content greater than .08 percent. He was released to the custody of his daughter and is due back in Scarsdale Village Court later this year.
