SCARSDALE, NY. - Dr. Iris Marie Almeida, a 39-year resident of Scarsdale, died July 23. She was 74.
Almeida was born March 18, 1939, in Mangalore, India, March 18, 1939, to Cecilia and Albert Mascarenhas. She graduated with an MD from Grant Medical College in Bombay, and practiced as a pediatrician prior to immigrating to the U.S. in 1974. In the U.S., she trained as a psychiatrist at Montefiore Medical Center and subsequently practiced at the Cornell Department of Psychiatry in White Plains.
Almeida is survived by her husband, Robert Almeida; children Nicole Visaggi (David), Bob Almeida (Kira), and Simone Almeida (Jayesh Gandhi); seven grandchildren all of Scarsdale; sisters, Florence Ferris, Marjorie Almeida, and Diana Coelho; and brother, Michael Mascarenhas, all currently residing in India.
Calling hours are Thursday, July 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Friday, July 26 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Edwin L. Bennett Funeral Home in Scarsdale. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, July 27 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 8 Carman Road, Scarsdale.
