Train Station Odor May Have Been Train Problem

SCARSDALE N.Y. – A reported natural gas odor near the train station turned out to be the smell of burning rubber, according to the Scarsdale Fire Department log covering Oct. 3-11.

The report, taken at 7:37 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, indicated a complaint of an odor near the train station and the steps to the platform near the Popham Road bridge. Other reports were called in ranging from Garth and Frieghtway to East Parkway and Crane. Investigation found no gas fumes but a heavy odor of burning rubber. After further investigation showed no gas readings, Con Edison was called in to check its equipment, and Metro North advised Scarsdale Fire Department of a possible problem with a northbound train in the area.

Smoke scare: At 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, a passerby reported smoke coming from a chimney at 1349 Weaver St. Firefighters found an open side door and entered to a fire burning in a fireplace with nobody home. The fireplace had a glass front and was properly venting out the chimney.

Building fire: A fire that began in a garage at 182 Gaylord Road about 11:40 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, was extinguished by the homeowner by the time firefighters arrived. The fire started in the garage, in two fuel containers that the homeowner had moved into the driveway. Firefighters finished extinguishing the fire, which had spread to mulch, garden cuttings, paint rags and brushes. According to the report, the fire may have been caused by spontaneous combustion of oil-based wood finish product not properly disposed of.

Car crash: At 4:19 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, a vehicle crash was reported on the Bronx River Parkway northbound at River Road. No injuries were reported in the single-car accident, but the automobile was heavily damaged.

Water leak: A resident reported a water leak in the ground at the rear of the carriage house at 83 Garden Road. The leak appeared to be from a village valve on private property. Firefighters attempted to turn the valve off, but the valve malfunctioned. The Water Department was notified.
