Besides ignoring them -- while your blood pressure silently rises -- is there really anything you can do about them?
Yes, plenty, says Wall Street Journal reporter Joanna Stern.
Stern writes that billions of these calls -- which can be from scammers -- have made their way into American homes this year alone and the Federal Trade Commission has been swamped with complaints.
Getting on the national Do Not Call Registry only works, Stern wrote, to keep the legit companies away; scam artists merely sneer at them.
Among the tips in Stern’s Wall Street Journal article are:
- If you don’t recognize the number, don’t answer, let it go to voice mail. But if you accidentally pick up, hang up immediately.
- Suspicious numbers can be traced using apps such as Hiya, or a reverse lookup on whitepages.com. Find it and report it.
- Use a call blocking service such as Nomorobo.
